How sauces can help children try new foods + flavours

Sauces: The secret ingredient to children trying new foods and flavours…

Sauces often get a bad rap, but as a team of parents (including a children’s dietitian!) we know they can be total game-changers when it comes to helping kids try new foods.

Familiar, tasty, and predictable, sauces can give little ones the confidence to explore different flavours and textures.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with our friends (and fellow Kids Food & Drink Collective brand!) at Dr Will’s to bring you tasty snack + sauce combos that make mealtimes fun, easy, and full of flavour.

You've likely spotted Dr Will's on the shelves during your weekly food shop, but did you know that their natural condiments are free from refined sugars? Take their Tomato Ketchup, for example, it's naturally sweetened with only fruits and veggies, whereas another brand (who we shall not name 👀) has sugar listed as the third ingredient!

Whilst Dr Will's isn't specifically designed for kids, it's certainly a brand we feel confident offering to our children (and we love the Sriracha Hot Sauce ourselves!).

Why sauces can help picky eaters...

“Sauces and dips sometimes get a side-eye from parents when it comes to kids’ eating. But, as a children’s dietitian, I see firsthand how they can support children in engaging with meals and exploring less familiar foods. Often, a sauce acts as a bridge that encourages kids to feel confident enough to try new textures and flavours.

Sauces like Dr Will’s Green Goddess Dip are also a great way to introduce something different at mealtime. A tiny amount of green dip might be a gateway to those elusive green vegetables, giving kids a low-pressure, positive first step toward foods they’d normally avoid.” - Lucy Upton, our Children’s Dietitian

Taste tested by the Dr Will's recipe developer, here are our Favourite Pots for Tots Snack + Dr Will’s sauce combos:

“The tangy ketchup provides a contrast and enhances the savoury notes of the frittata.”

Fish Pie Bites with Green Goddess Dressing
"Green Goddess Dressing adds a heavenly creamy herbiness to this bite, with the tarragon & parsley from the dressing really complementing the fish."

Cottage Pie Bites with BBQ Sauce
“The savoury smokiness of BBQ Sauce makes all the other flavours in this bite sing.”

Cheesy Veg Bites with Original Ketchup
“The ketchup adds a little fruity acidity that balances the cheesiness of the bites.”

Chicken & Veggie Bites with Green Goddess Dressing
"There were notes of sage and thyme in the chicken bite which reminded me of a little chicken pie. Adding a little bit of Green Goddess Dressing throws some tarragon into the mix, which really adds to the herby depth of this bite"
